Community Spotlight | Northwood

By Jordyn Windnagle - March 29, 2023

Northwood, Ohio is a tight-knit community that's known for its friendly, welcoming atmosphere. It was originally called Ross Township in the late 1800s, the northernmost township in Wood County. After the village of Rossford seceded from Ross Township, it became the village of Northwood in 1962 and was officially established as a city two decades later. The population of Northwood has hovered around 5,000 ever since.

The city lives up to its motto: "Where Opportunity Abounds." Its proximity to major highways and the Toledo Executive Airport provides easy access to transportation and amenities. Northwood's employment rate is above the national average and there are several large-scale employers that call the city home. Hirzel Canning Company, producer of Dei Fratelli tomato sauces, has been headquartered in Northwood, Ohio for a century. Northwood Local Schools has been named a Toledo Blade Top Workplace for 4 consecutive years. In addition, Hollywood Casino and Owens Community College are located just outside of Northwood.

The city also has something major planned at the site of the old Woodville Mall. The shopping center had mass closures in the early 2000s and was demolished in 2014. Now the city is redeveloping it into The Enclave, an "age-in-place" mixed use community with commercial and office space, residential, and senior living opportunities.

The Enclave isn't the only major community investment in recent years; in 2017, Northwood Local Schools opened a state-of-the-art campus for preschool through twelfth grade. The 130,000 square foot property has integrated technology throughout and managed to preserve elements from the former Olney Elementary. As of the 2022 Ohio Report Cards, Northwood School District was ranked in the top 30% of all districts in the state.

Residential real estate in the city has increased 9.6% over the last 12 months and, on average, homes are selling at 102.1% of their list price. The average days on market is 48, down 25% over the last year and 20% less than the current average for all of Northwest Ohio. So if you're looking to buy in Northwood, you need to be vigilant!

Overall, Northwood is a charming city that offers a high quality of life for its residents. Start your home search here or contact a Danberry agent!
